09 November 2020

MSWA Board Member Professor William Carroll AM has been nominated for the 2021 WA Australian of the Year.

Professor Carroll is a leading national and global neurologist, former president of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists and current president of the World Federation of Neurology.

His work has helped to identify reparative cells in the human nervous system and to steer the International Progressive MS Alliance towards solving progressive MS. MS affects 2.8million people worldwide.

CEO Marcus Stafford AM said it was no surprise Professor Carroll was put forward for the nomination.

“Professor Carroll’s impact on neurology has been influential worldwide, particularly in the space of MS research and treatment,” said Mr Stafford.

“MSWA is very fortunate to have Professor Carroll as a member of our Board. His expertise, knowledge and guidance make him an invaluable part of our team as seen with this nomination, and by being honoured with an order of Australia last year.”

Former founding director of the MS Research Australia Board, MS Research Australia (MSRA) and the founding chair of the Research Management Council for over 10 years meant playing an instrumental role in establishing MSRA’s research governance structures. These have been adopted by many not-for-profit organisations across the globe.

Professor Carroll is also an advocate for the advancement of brain health via the Global Neurology Alliance and the World Federation of Neurology and was awarded Western Australian of the Year for Business and Professions in 2012.

Should Professor Carroll be named WA Australian of the Year (announced this Thursday, November 12), he will be in the running for Australian of the Year, announced in January next year.
