Kate’s Story
Living at MSWA’s Butler residential facility has been an absolute dream; I’m leading an amazingly active life thanks to staff who listen and care.”
My name is Kate and I’m a true-crime enthusiast with a passion for fashion. I’ve been living and thriving at the MSWA Butler accommodation facility for the past six years.
Almost 20 years ago, I was devastated to learn I had multiple sclerosis (MS) in my 30s. During a visit to see family in Perth, I knew something wasn’t right. I didn’t really know much about MS or anyone living with it, and the diagnosis turned my world upside down. I felt lost and scared.
After the initial shock, the diagnosis brought clarity. It explained some of the symptoms I was experiencing, and with that understanding, I felt empowered. When I moved back to Perth, I was introduced to a team member from MSWA, who was a beacon of positivity, knowledge, and reassurance. From that moment, I felt more positive and really supported, and I knew I wasn’t alone.
I started accessing MSWA services including hydrotherapy at Wilson and stayed at the Treendale respite facility on and off before living there for three years. As soon as the Butler accommodation facility was built and opened, I was thrilled to move in as it meant being closer to my family.
Living here has been an absolute dream, and I am so happy. The staff are expertly trained, professional and most importantly, provide the care and warmth of a family. I also receive physiotherapy and occupational therapy tailored to my needs, helping me live life to the fullest. MSWA’s support allows me to thrive, so I can continue doing the things I love the most – whether it’s diving into a true-crime novel, crafting, or fashion!
Your donation will ensure MSWA is able to continue to provide essential support services to help people like me who are living with neurological conditions, and to advance neurological research.
