Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs)

MSWA Occupational Therapists conduct comprehensive Functional Capacity Assessments as required by NDIS and other funding bodies, examining various aspects of everyday activities and home environment.

By understanding how a neurological condition impacts the individual's life, as well as their preferences and needs, our OTs can develop detailed reports that support application for essential funding.

Living independently (NDIS Home & Living Supports)

An individual's home environment plays a large part on how they go about their daily activities. Assistive technology (equipment)

We know there is no one-size-fits all when it comes to disability equipment.

MSWA Occupational Therapists adopt an individualised approach to identifying the most suitable equipment and assistive technologies specific to the individual's needs and preferences. This process is tailored to each Client and starts with a one-on-one consultation.

From modified cutlery, electric recliners to height-adjustable beds, wheelchairs, and transfer aids, these tools are designed to help you participate more independently in everyday life.

For specialised equipment, MSWA OTs have good working relationships with assistive technology suppliers and can work with you to trial or rent equipment that would suit your needs.

Improving cognition

Cognition is an umbrella term used to describe how we use our brain to think. It refers to the complex, high-level functions of our brain, including processing information, attention, memory, problem solving, visual perception and verbal fluency.

The MSWA Occupational Therapy Team provides a tailored cognition service to assist Clients to improve brain function impacting memory, planning and decision making.

MSWA OTs also run an evidence-based program called MEMORehab that can help improve your cognition. To find out more about the program, contact [email protected]

Posture and supported lying

Occupational therapists use a multi-disciplinary approach to consider a person’s daily life across 24 hours. At MSWA, our OTs follow a Client's journey to assist them in maintaining functional independence.

Our OTs can assess and script customised wheelchairs with supportive postural seating systems which take into consideration alignment, pressure and function. In addition, the duration of time spent in bed should also be considered, as it often far outweighs time spent in seating systems. It should be considered that if a Client has seated support, they may also benefit from Supported Lying.

‘Supported Lying’ (often termed 24-hour positioning or sleep positioning) can be defined as postural care which is gentle and respectful in order to protect and restore a person’s body shape against the forces of gravity.

Sleep Health

It is common for people with neurological conditions to experience changes or disruptions to their sleep. This can be challenging to navigate as it can lead to fatigue, further impacting other symptoms.

MSWA OTs can improve your sleep health via:

  • Research Participation
MSWA Occupational Therapy team has partnered with ECU on their Improved Sleep Health (ISH) initiative. You will have the valuable opportunity to take part in research and get valuable insight into your sleep health. Our OTs can work with you to use the data collected to work on a tailored solution to help improve your sleep.

  • Individualised Supports
Our OTs will provide individualised, tailored support that takes in account your sleep routine, sleep environment and other factor that might be impacting your sleep.
Home modifications

MSWA OTs can help with minor home modifications that do not involve making structural changes to the home, including ramps, rails and handheld shower hoses.
