Research progress and impact

Through the combined efforts of brilliant researchers in MS and other neurological conditions, advancements in technology, continual developments of services and support and strong advocacy for change, we are improving the quality of life for people with MS and other neurological conditions.

The research MSWA has funded to date has helped paved the way to better understanding of MS and other neurological conditions. This has led to the development of extensive data sets, scientific discoveries and translating those breakthroughs into new and pioneering tools to treat and manage MS and other neurological conditions, and generate the evidence needed to ensure personalised quality care across the whole experience.

Through funded research by MS organisations like MSWA, the average life expectancy for Australians with MS now matches the general population.

Because of research:

  • More people are living life to the fullest
  • More people can get treatment earlier
  • Exceptional Australian researchers are on their way to making breakthroughs in neurological conditions

But there’s still a lot to be done, as we continue to strive for better outcomes by aiming for early detection and diagnosis, refining life-changing treatments and therapies to make them more effective and accessible for all, designing best patient care through clinical practice, and targeting one of the greatest unmet needs by finding solutions for progressive MS.

Our new research pillars empower us to build on our research progress to date, continue to improve our knowledge of MS and other neurological conditions, and most importantly, make sure this new information is translated into practice in Western Australia, nationally and globally so that all can live life without limits.

That's why our selection process for research grants will now be reviewed by MS Australia's expert panels according to our research pillars towards prevention, diagnosis, treatment and/or support of MS and other neurological conditions:

  • Encourage co-design and participation by the MS and other neurological conditions community
  • Foster collaboration amongst researchers, industries, organisations and government
  • Strive for equitable outcomes for all Australians
  • Translation of findings to the community and into practice
  • Demonstrate sustainability of research idea
  • Building capacity in Western Australia
  • Greatest potential promise to make meaningful impact
  • Transparency and excellence in delivery, information and communication
  • Innovative and creative solutions to challenges

By supporting researchers and harnessing data, our aim is for all people with MS and other neurological conditions to directly benefit from research as quickly as possible through communication and collaboration within the neurological conditions community, exploring innovation to difficult issues as well as engage with lived experience, carers and family.
