NDIS

What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

The NDIS is a Government scheme which aims to connect Australians with disability to services in the community.

The NDIS provides funding to eligible people with disability to gain more time with family and friends, greater independence and an improved quality of life.

Visit Australian Government's NDIS website to assess your eligibility and begin the process of applying for funding.

How do I apply for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

While unfortunately MSWA cannot submit a funding application on your behalf, once you have been onboarded as an MSWA Client, our friendly team can talk you through the application process. This includes:

  • Connecting you with your local National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Local Area Coordinator (if eligible). Your Local Area Coordinator will be able to assist you in navigating the NDIS application process, providing support from the initial planning stage until you receive your finalised plan. During the planning phase, your Local Area Coordinator will assess your specific needs and goals to determine the support services you require.
  • MSWA can arrange an eligibility report, which can be completed over the phone with one of our Occupational Therapists, as evidence to help support your application.

Alternatively, you can visit www.ndis.gov.au/applying-access-ndis for step-by-step instructions on how to apply, or call the NDIS team on 1800 800 110 for support with this process.

How long does the process take to receive NDIS funding?

Applications for government funding through National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can take some time to be assessed, approved, and made available.

Waiting times can vary depending on:

  • Type of funding you are applying for.

  • Demand and availability of funding.

For the most accurate information about timeframes, it is best to contact NDIS directly for an update.

If you are a new MSWA Client, we may be able to support you in the interim. Get in touch with our team today.

  • Are under 65 years of age at the time of applying for the NDIS.
  • Are an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category Visa holder who lives in Australia.

Is MSWA connected to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

No. The National Disability Insurance Scheme is a government scheme that provides funding for services.

MSWA is a service provider that provides services funded under the scheme.

MSWA is a not-for-profit, non-government organisation which provides services and supports which can be accessed through NDIS or other funding.

If you’re living with a neurological condition, you can nominate MSWA as your NDIS service provider to receive the services and supports you need to live the life you choose.

Our dedicated team of professionals see and care for you as the individual you are, with your own unique goals – not the condition you live with.

From the moment you make your first enquiry, to establishing your plan and receiving your services, there is always an MSWA team member on the journey with you.

What if I'm not eligible for the NDIS?

MSWA will continue to work with you to identify the best service options available to your specific needs.

Who decides if I can access the NDIS?

When you have provided all necessary information as part of the application process, the National Disability Insurance Agency will make a decision about whether you are eligible for the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The National Disability Insurance Agency is a government body, which is not connected in any way to MSWA.

You can find out more about this process on the NDIS website.

Do I need an NDIS plan?

To help determine if you need an NDIS plan, you might consider your answers to the below questions:

  • Does your condition affect your ability to take part in activities around the home?
  • Does your condition impact your mobility? (strength, balance, ability to walk)
  • Can you think of any support that could make your life easier?
  • Do you need support now to reduce your support needs in the future?

They will first check your eligibility and help you book your ACAT assessment.

Once your ACAT is complete, you’ll receive a letter from My Aged Care or Services Australia advising when your package funding is assigned. From there you are ready to source a local provider like MSWA.

Can MSWA help me to apply for Support at Home?

While MSWA cannot apply for an aged care assessment on your behalf, we can help you better understand the Support at Home process.

Visit My Aged Care or ring 1800 200 422 to begin the funding application process. My Age Care will determine your eligibility, assign a classification level and arrange an assessment, which usually takes place in your home.

Once My Aged Care or Services Australia has advised your funding approval, you are now ready to choose a provider such as MSWA to discuss the services.

Visit Get Support to connect with our experienced team and find out more.

What are the funding levels for the Support at Home program?

Under Support at Home, people are assigned a classification level rather than a package level. These levels reflect the level of care and support you need.

Support at Home includes eight classification levels, ranging from lower to higher support needs. The classification level you receive is based on your aged care assessment and determines the amount of funding available for services.

How much does MSWA services cost for Support at Home recipients?

At MSWA, we aim to make our fee structure as transparent as possible.

Daily Care Fees
Under the Support at Home program, providers like MSWA, do not charge daily care fees.

Client Contributions
Some recipients may be required to pay a client contribution towards the cost of their Support at Home services. Client contributions are set by the Australian Government and are based on an income and assets assessment conducted by Services Australia. Services Australia will advise you if a contribution applies.

Contribution Caps
There are annual and lifetime caps on the total amount of client contributions you can be asked to pay. These caps are set by the government and cannot be changed or waived by MSWA.

To learn more about client contributions visit the Income and Means Assessment and the Support at Home Estimator Tool.

Alternatively, MSWA also provides services under a fee‑for‑service arrangement, where services are invoiced directly to the Client.

This option may apply if:
•    You do not have government funding, or
•    Your Support at Home funding does not cover all the services you would like to receive.

Fee‑for‑service rates are set by MSWA and may vary by service type. These rates are separate from NDIS and Support at Home pricing.

As a Home Care Package Client, how will the transition to Support at Home affect me?

As of 1 November 2025, the new Support at Home program will replace Home Care Package (HCP) program.

How does it affect current MSWA Clients?

  • Your current HCP will automatically transition to Support at Home so there is no need to reapply or be reassessed.
  • You will receive a letter from Services Australia to confirm this transition. Please reach out to your Client Liaison Coordinator (CLC) within 30 days of receiving this letter to discuss your funding.
  • You will retain the same level of funding.
  • Any unspent HCP funds will be carried over to the new Support at Home program.
  • Quarterly budgets and monthly statements will be provided to help you better manage your program spending.
  • Care management fees will now be funded at 10% of your quarterly budget

We recommend reviewing the information provided by the Australian Government regarding the reform.

Your Client Liaison Coordinator (CLC) will be supporting you through this transition, including how the changes may affect your contributions and updating you with any further developments.
