Celebrating Connection: Occupational Therapy Week 2024
Occupational Therapy Week 2024 gave us an opportunity to reflect on the profound impact that MSWA Occupational Therapists (OTs) have on the lives of our Clients. This year’s theme, “Connection,” highlights not only the diverse skills we have as OTs but also the genuine bonds we form with MSWA Clients that we have connected with. It’s a privilege to accompany our Clients on their journeys, reinforcing the essence of holistic care in occupational therapy.
At the heart of our practice lies a steadfast commitment to empower individuals, helping them lead fuller, more independent lives. Each day presents the rewarding experience of witnessing our Clients achieve even the smallest of victories in their daily activities. Whether it’s discovering the perfect fit of an assistive device or implementing practical strategies, these incremental successes accumulate, paving the way for progress over time.
To celebrate our profession, MSWA proudly hosted an “All About OT” presentation, featuring an insightful talk by our OT student from Curtin University, Ciara Thackray at Wilson Outreach. This occasion not only showcased the breadth of our field but also fostered valuable engagement with our Outreach Clients and fellow colleagues, emphasizing the distinctive contribution of occupational therapy within MSWA.
We reached out to our dedicated OTs, asking them to share what it means to be an occupational therapist and the significant impact they make on their Clients' lives.
Here are some of their reflections:
Tamara expressed, “What makes me most proud to be an occupational therapist is our ability to connect with Clients in such a holistic way. Whether it’s coaching based on our expertise or simply listening and learning from their experiences, this role allows me to truly know and appreciate people on a personal level. It’s an honour that has changed me for the better.”
Chrystal echoed this sentiment, saying, “My pride as an OT stems from knowing that my work directly improves people’s lives. Witnessing my Clients achieve small gains in their daily tasks—seeing their joy when they can do something they once struggled with—is profoundly rewarding. Those little wins illustrate the vital role we play in supporting people through their challenges.”
Kaye added, “I feel proud and honoured that we assist individuals across various aspects of their lives. Our broad scope means we can impact independence in so many ways—from helping with bed mobility to enhancing accessibility for activities like horse riding or swimming.” Kirsty shared, “One of the most fulfilling aspects of being an occupational therapist is the chance to make a tangible difference by helping Clients find creative solutions to their challenges. Seeing their joy and relief when they realise they can accomplish tasks they thought were unattainable is incredibly rewarding.”
Caroline spoke passionately about her motivations, stating, “I love that I can help people live their best lives despite having disabilities. Everyone deserves to lead fulfilling lives, and I’m proud to have the skills necessary to support that.”
I take pride in supporting Clients to meet their goals. Our work allows for incredible creativity, finding new solutions to challenges that many other professions cannot address," Sarah remarked.
Euan emphasized the collaborative nature of the profession: “The ability to work alongside Clients to problem-solve instils motivation in me. Each day offers new challenges, and I am driven to empower Clients to continue living their best lives.”
Amee articulated the dynamic nature of OT, saying, “Being an occupational therapist requires compassion, flexibility, creativity, and collaboration. Each day is unique, and I am grateful to be part of a team that enables individuals to engage in meaningful activities that bring purpose and joy to their lives.”
As OT Week unfolded, we celebrated not just the roles we play, but the profound connections we foster with our Clients and within our team. I am continually inspired by the creativity of my colleagues and the resilience of those we serve. Our work embodies the spirit of adaptability and innovation, proving that even the smallest changes can lead to significant improvements in quality of life.
Cheers to all the incredible OTs out there making a difference — one meaningful activity at a time!
