Unlocking Joy: Accessible Leisure and Recreation

Did you know that Occupational Therapists can help you with engaging in leisure activities? A little-known fact is that the ‘occupation’ in Occupational Therapy, represents the three categories of how we spend our time which are self-care, productivity, and LEISURE!

Leisure is vital to our wellbeing and quality of life. Researchers in Denmark found that leisure activities with social, physical and creative elements are most likely to have the biggest impact on emotional and social wellbeing in people with multiple sclerosis1. It was also concluded that mobility was the biggest challenge for people with MS to participate in leisure activities.

While it’s true that having reduced mobility makes interacting with others and the world more challenging, it doesn’t have to stop you from doing the things you love. MSWA Occupational Therapists are experts in creative problem-solving and they can help you to find alternative ways to engage in the leisure activities you love, used to love, or even find new hobbies.

When it comes to adapted leisure for disabilities, the possibilities are endless, and the right modification or tool can make a world of difference.

Did you know there are programs in Perth for people of all abilities to go sailing? You can join Sailability WA, where they can provide extra assistance with getting in and out of the boat, help you board a boat in your wheelchair, and even assist with hoist transfers.

If you love taking photos but have a weakened hand or grip, there are tools that can help you hold the camera steady with handy press buttons to capture photos.

Maybe you love to express yourself through your sense of style or fashion. You can still wear that smart button up shirt, without struggling with the buttons, by simply changing the buttons for magnetic closures - making getting dressed a breeze!

Do you feel most yourself when you wear your favourite shade of lipstick? MSWA OTs can help prescribe you with tools and tips to make your makeup application process more accessible – to make you look and feel good!

If you’d like some ideas on how to participate in your favourite pastimes or create new ones, reach out to MSWA’s friendly Occupational Therapist team. They can complete interest questionnaires to help you find your next hobby, assess your function, and trial modifications and adaptive aids to help you get the most enjoyment out of your favourite activities.
