MSWA Primary Health Care: Neuro Impact Forum
In October, we proudly hosted the inaugural MSWA Primary Health Care Neuro Impact Forum at the Kailis Bros Cafe. This event gathered 22 general practitioners (GPs), practice managers, and practice nurses from the Perth metro area for an engaging and informative discussion on neurological conditions.
Led by distinguished keynote speakers, Assoc Prof Kevin O’Connor and Prof Tom Jenkins, the forum offered valuable insights into the latest developments in motor neuron disease (MND) and multiple sclerosis (MS), focusing on diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing research.
Assoc Prof Kevin O’Connor is a trailblazer in his field, being the first dual-qualified consultant neuroimmunologist in Australia. He serves as the Head of the Department of Neurology and Stroke and the Director of Physician Education at Joondalup Health Campus. Additionally, he practices as a Clinical Immunologist and Neuroimmunologist at Royal Perth Hospital and is an adjunct professor at Curtin University Medical School.
Prof Tom Jenkins brings over 15 years of expertise in MND as both a clinician and researcher. As the Consultant Neurologist at Joondalup Health Campus and Head of the Neurology Service at Midland St John of God Hospital, he also leads the multidisciplinary MND clinic at Midland.
We extend our gratitude to Assoc Prof Kevin O’Connor and Prof Tom Jenkins for sharing their expertise, knowledge, and insights. Many attendees found the forum to be both interesting and professionally enriching, with the added benefit of accruing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours for their participation.
This forum served as a platform for MSWA to foster relationships with local medical practitioners and raise awareness about our support services so, we can better assist community members who are newly diagnosed or in need of additional support.
We look forward to future collaborations with local medical practitioners to improve the quality of care of our neuro community.
