Make your Will for free this September
From 14 to 28 September, MSWA is partnering with SafeWill, so you can create or update your Will online, free of charge, from the comfort of your own home. The process is simple, secure and can be completed in as little as 20 minutes.
Having an up-to-date Will is one of the most important ways to protect the people you love and ensure your wishes are known. It can provide peace of mind for you and your family, helping to reduce uncertainty and make things easier for those closest to you in the future.
Many people also choose to use this opportunity to think about the legacy they want to leave behind. After taking care of loved ones, you can choose to leave a gift in your Will to support a cause close to you.

A future where others can find the same support
On October 10 2016, Miles collapsed at work. He woke up in an ambulance, to sirens blasting and the rush of people getting him to the hospital as fast as possible. He'd had a stroke.
Miles spent the next four months in hospital, learning how to walk and talk again.
“I had no speech at all. I couldn't say a single word for six whole weeks. Even when I left the hospital, I left in a wheelchair, I wasn't walking,” he remembers.
“I do everything with one hand, as my left arm has been paralysed since October 2016. It's pretty tough and hasn't got any easier but I've learned to adapt in some ways. You don't want to sit there and not be able to cope with it – I'm open to new ideas.”
One way he has been able to make those changes is with the help of MSWA. After seeing an MSWA TV ad , Miles thought "maybe they can help me", so he reached out. He was determined to put in the work with MSWA’s Physiotherapists to improve his condition.
“MSWA helped me with physiotherapy when I was at that stage and I still need ongoing support – I still do weekly sessions with my physio. MSWA has also provided me with a shower chair, which I use daily, and helped me get a leg brace. It’s made a huge difference and means I don't need to use a wheelchair.
After a series of brain seizures at the end of 2025, Miles felt that all the hard work he had put in had been set back.
"I knew I had to do the work to get better again - I'm very determined and well-disciplined. I can't say how helpful the MSWA Physiotherapists were, they worked so hard on my neck."
Miles has chosen to leave a gift in his Will to help ensure that people who may face similar experiences can receive the right support too.
"I've put a gift in my Will to MSWA because I think it's important that when someone's going through the same sort of thing that I've been through, MSWA is there when people reach out to them. They can get that connection, get support, and be helped along the way with their journey, the same way that I have," Miles shares.
Miles’ decision is his way of looking beyond his own journey and helping make sure others can find the support they need. You can do the same by considering the future you want to help create.

What is a Gift in Will/Bequest?
A Gift in Will, also known as a bequest, is a donation left to a charity in your Will. It’s a way of leaving a lasting legacy that continues your values into the future.
Do I need to be wealthy to leave a gift in my Will?
Not at all. Many people think they need to be wealthy to make a difference - but that’s not true. Even leaving a small percentage, or as little as 1% of your estate, can have a life-changing impact while still caring for your loved ones.
What happens if I don’t have a Will?
Without a valid Will, your estate will be distributed according to law - which may not reflect your wishes. Creating a Will ensures your loved ones are cared for and that your values live on through the causes you believe in.
What type of gift can I leave?
You can choose the type of gift that feels right for you.
There are three principal types of gift you may wish to consider:
- Pecuniary bequest – a fixed sum of money specified in your will (for example, "I give the sum of $X to MSWA for its general purposes").
- Specific bequest – a particular asset or item, such as shares, real property, or personal effects, left directly to MSWA.
- Residuary bequest – a share or the entirety of the residue of your estate, being the amount remaining after all debts, taxes, expenses, and other bequests have been settled. This type of gift often has the greatest long-term impact.

What if I’ve already written my Will?
It’s simple to update an existing Will. You don’t need to start again - your solicitor can add a short amendment (called a “codicil”) to include a gift to MSWA Limited.
Can I write my Will myself?
Yes. Many of our supporters choose to use online Will-writing platforms like Safewill or Gathered Here. Both are quick, affordable, and legally sound, with every Will reviewed by experts. As an MSWA supporter, you’ll also receive a special discount.
Of course, you can also write your Will through your own solicitor if you prefer.
Do I need to tell MSWA about my gift?
You don’t have to - your Will is personal and private. But if you feel comfortable sharing your intentions with us, we’d love to recognise and thank you for your generosity and share with you the impact gifts like yours have on people living with neurological conditions.
What wording should I use in my Will?
To help ensure your gift reaches MSWA as intended, please look to use our full legal name and ABN/ACN when drafting the relevant clause:

We suggest the following for your solicitor:
“I give [the residue of my estate / % of my estate / the sum of $ ], free of all duties and taxes, to MSWA Limited (ABN 75 638 080 972) ACN (670 532 224) for its general purposes. I declare that the receipt of an authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge to my Executors.”
