Sail into summer

As springtime winds down and winter becomes a distant memory, our senses and minds are increasingly captivated by the rising temperatures, longer days and changing colors of our natural landscapes. Birak, in the Noongar seasonal calendar spans from December to January.

While this season can bring much excitement, it also can present unique challenges that can impact our overall wellbeing. The anticipation of holiday gatherings and pressures of social commitments can sometimes result in feelings of stress and overwhelm. Additionally, the intense heat during this season can contribute to fatigue and a sense of lethargy. Here are some insights and strategies to help navigate the summer season and enjoy its offerings while managing the unique demands of this period.

One valuable aspect the Birak season provides is a natural pause for reflection. Actively reflecting on the past year and contemplating the one that is approaching can help provide clarity, a sense of direction and renewed purpose. Whether it’s finding quiet moments of contemplation, journaling our thoughts, or discussions with others; reflection can help us gain perspective and support a healthy mindset. The processes of reflecting can allow us to truly appreciate our achievements and experience growth from our challenges. It creates an opportunity to develop meaning, express gratitude, and set intentions for the coming seasons ahead.

Engaging with our abundant natural environments is another strategy for enhancing wellbeing during the Birak season. WA is home to an array of landscapes, from coastal beaches and winding rivers to suburban parklands, national parks and even our own gardens. Engaging in and with our natural environments not only can elevate our mood but also can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. The sights, sounds, and smells of nature excite our senses and can assist in feeling grounded, provide a sense of connection and encourage an appreciation for the wider world that surrounds us.

The Birak season is also a wonderful time for connecting socially with friends and family, attending events, and participating in community activities. Participating in social activities can strengthen connections, provide emotional support and reduce feelings of isolation.

However, it’s crucial to find our own personal balance, or summer festivities can become more stressful than they are exciting or relaxing. Setting realistic expectations, letting go of comparisons and focusing on aligning choices with our own personal values can significantly reduce the pressure you may feel during the summer season. Seeking support from friends, family, or a counsellor can also make a significant difference during this time. Sharing thoughts and feelings with others can provide comfort and reassurance, reminding us that we are not isolated in challenging times.

As the Birak season unfolds in WA, incorporating reflection, engaging with nature, nurturing connections, and setting realistic expectations can support us to manage the challenges that arise and step into the summer season with a renewed sense of balance and wellbeing.
