Employment Support for people living with a neurological condition

MSWA's Employment Support Service is specifically tailored to people living with multiple sclerosis and other acquired neurological conditions in Western Australia. We can help you succeed at work, whether that is staying in your current job or finding appropriate new employment.

We offer the following employment support to Western Australians:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) Employment Support Service
  • Stroke Employment Support Service
  • Parkinson's disease Employment Support Service
  • Motor neurone disease (MND) Employment Support Service

Our team of experienced employment consultants and allied health professionals will meet with you individually to assess and support you.

Supports provided may include:

  • Finding strategies to better manage your symptoms
  • Utilising technology or equipment to enable you to function more effectively in the workplace
  • Providing assistance to write a resume and practice interviews
  • Providing education to your employer

We can help you every step of the way until you feel secure in your current job or have found new employment.

The MSWA Difference

Our employment support consultants understand nerological conditions, including multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson's disease and motor neurone disease, to name a few. And it is this experience that makes our service so unique. We understand that some symptoms seem invisible to others, but can make working difficult, so we have a number of strategies for coping with these impacts.

Ultimately we aim to empower you to take control of your working life and we have helped many people living with neurological conditions to either stay in their current job or to find appropriate new employment.

We can also help you find out more about superannuation insurance and other legal rights you have as an employee, as well as refer you into other MSWA services and supports.

MSWA's Employment Support Service is free for people living with multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson's disease or motor neurone disease who are able to work. The service currently able to be accessed in the Perth metropolitan area and WA's south west.

Work Assist

If you’re currently working but feel as though your neurological condition is impacting your ability to work, our specialist team of allied health professionals will assist you to identify the individual barriers you are experiencing at work and develop strategies to help you to remain to be a productive employee.

Our service offers individualised support and assistance that will help enable you to manage your symptoms and continue working. Common issues that can make the workplace challenging include:

  • Concerns regarding disclosure and workplace discrimination
  • Trouble moving around the workplace
  • Heat or cold sensitivity issues
  • Problems with concentration and memory
  • Stiffness and nerve pain
  • Fatigue

Helping you seek new employment

Job Seeking

If you are currently not working and would like support in seeking new employment, we may be able to assist you to identify suitable jobs, write a resume and practice interview techniques. Once you have found a job we also provide ongoing support to help you maintain your employment.

Our services include:

  • Assessments to review your physical and cognitive function
  • Assistance to identify and plan for suitable symptom management strategies that work for you
  • A holistic assessment and plan to help you identify and address anything that may impact your ability to work and function
  • Comprehensive workplace assessment to review current duties, workplace set up, and advice on how to modify your hours of work if suitable
  • Advice and assistance to utilise new technology and equipment that may better suit your needs
  • Advice and support to liaise with employers and managers
  • Education to employers and co-workers
