Learning you have Relapsing-Remitting multiple sclerosis (MS), which has no known cause or cure, at the age of 27, was devastating for Yvette Cocivera. She was working in her dream job as a vet nurse when she started experiencing vertigo and Optic Neuritis.

After discussions with Yvette’s doctor and a second opinion, she knew she couldn’t ignore her life was going to change. “After my diagnosis, I was angry and determined that I didn’t need any help, I felt like I was damaged goods. My parents were naturally worried, and it was really hard on the whole family,” said Yvette.

HAND IN HAND WITH MSWA

Yvette soon realised she was going to need help, and by reaching out to MSWA, she tackled her condition with their support. Yvette accessed support and services from the Bunbury Services Centre including nursing, physiotherapy, counselling, massage and welfare.

“MSWA gives me reassurance and stability, I feel lucky that I can talk to the Bunbury Health Team about my issues and they help find solutions. I'm able to maintain some independence in my life, which is really important to me,” said Yvette.

“Over the years it’s been a roller coaster of unpredictability, but I’ve accepted that and I’m trying to enjoy my life. I’ve gotten to the stage that I think, what will happen will happen, and I can’t control it, so I need to look after myself and continue with my medication,” said Yvette.

Sitting down with her seven-year-old son to explain MS was made easier by a comic book provided by the nurses. Fatigue affects her the most and impacts on her son. But being a single mother to Scott is one of her greatest joys and having her own family was always a big part of her dreams. Part of the help Yvette gets from MSWA at home, does mean she can get quality time with Scott.

Not being able to work and support her family was something Yvette always worried about. That’s where the NDIS has been wonderful with taking off some of the pressure. Yvette said, “MSWA helped me with my NDIS plan when I was living in Donnybrook and made the whole process really easy. MSWA and the NDIS have enabled me to continue working to provide for my family. I feel like our future is much brighter.”
