International Brain Awareness Week – MSWA’s research commitment

15 March 2021

Today marks the start of Brain Awareness Week, a global campaign to spark interest, awareness and support for brain science.

As the leading organisation supporting Western Australians living with a neurological condition, MSWA is proud of a record contribution of $4m to neurological research this financial year making us Western Australia’s leading contributor to neurological research.

Over the past 10 years, MSWA has funded over $20 million towards local, national and international research projects. We are currently supporting research projects being conducted by the Perron Institute, Edith Cowan University, Curtin University, Telethon Kids Institute, MS Research Australia (MSRA) and the International Progressive MS Alliance.

Associate Professor Jenny Rodger, from the Perron Institute and UWA, is among one of MSWA’s funded researchers.

“I feel incredibly lucky to receive the support I do from MSWA. My current research has provided new hypotheses about how brain plasticity works, and insight into how we can improve the brain's ability to reorganise itself by forming new connections throughout life. We’re also developing new studies aimed at treating a wide range of neurological conditions, as well as depression”, said Associate Professor Rodger.

CEO Marcus Stafford AM said he was excited and confident about the future of neurological research. “We believe our commitment to research will lead us one step closer to finding the cause, better treatments, and hopefully one day a cure for many neurological conditions. We couldn’t do it without the support of our fundraising community.”
