Multiple Sclerosis is the most common degenerative neurological condition diagnosed in young adults; with over 75% of people diagnosed under the age of 35. Being diagnosed with any long-term condition comes as a shock to most people.

Part of adjusting and coping with any diagnosis is learning about the condition, how it may affect you now or in the future and what treatment options are available for your type of diagnosis.

In years gone by there were no disease modifying treatments and the outlook was less than heartening for many. With images of disability and people in wheelchairs dominating the media there remains a perception that this will be the long term outcome for many. This is certainly not the case; there is a large percentage of people living with MS who “don’t look like they have MS”. They are leading normal everyday lives, although they may experience some challenges like fatigue, and they may even be your doctor, your teacher or the telephone technician fixing your phone!

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with MS and live in WA the MS Society is here to help you whereever possible. We have a range of supports and services available free to financial members of the Society. Our nurses and allied health staff specialise in MS and can field your concerns or queries and support you through the difficult and uncertain time following diagnosis.

So step one - learn more about MS and how it may affect you. But our advice is to only source what is relevant to you initially and use credible sources of information! With over 11 million hits in a Google search you can be totally overwhelmed and misled!

So please read through our articles and links and if you would like to speak to a nurse or other staff member please ring 9365 4888 or contact us to gain more information.
