The MS Society of Western Australia (MSWA) is proud to announce that in 2012 we invested a record amount of $1,000,000 to sponsor two important new research projects. CEO Marcus Stafford said, "This research contribution is the largest in the country, and sets a new benchmark for MS research funding nationally. It is thanks to the generosity of the Western Australians who support MSWA and its fundraising projects such as the MS Mega Home Lottery and Step Up for MS, that we can invest in research, which provides hope for thousands of people living with MS."
The money will firstly establish a global scientific registry, based in Perth. The registry will collect vital data on treatment effects, outcomes and long term prognoses following a new, experimental stem cell procedure which involves reinfusion of a patient's own stem cells. The second project will fund research into whether vitamin D supplements can help reduce the neurological damage caused by MS and MS relapse rates.
