Services in Country Areas

Currently four country trips are undertaken each year by Members of the Health Team to rural and isolated areas. These are funded by the Department of Health.

The purpose of these trips is to provide assistance, education and support to Members who live in isolated areas of WA, and to their family. The Health Team also contacts other service providers in those areas to discuss multiple sclerosis and how it relates to Members in the area. Up to date information about multiple sclerosis and about research is also provided.

The Health Team comprising of a Home Visiting Nurse, Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist, contact Members in the country area due for a visit and organise suitable times and days for the team to meet in the person's home. The trips usually span three or four days.

In addition to the country trips by the Health Team, country Members are supported through a telephone service which is provided by all Members of the Health Team. Country Members are encouraged to telephone for advice and for support at any time.

Where services are required by a country Member, and can not be accessed because of the Member’s inability to pay, the Society may purchase the service for the Member. Emergency visits are also made by individual Members of the Health Team for Members who live in the country and who are in crisis.
