Nursing
The aim of the nursing team is:
- To provide Members, and their family, with relevant accurate information to enable them to better understand Multiple Sclerosis and how it can affect them.
- To identify potential health problems and provide advice on managing them.
- To recommend relevant health or care agencies for Members.
- To respect the needs of the individual and assist them to have these needs met within the resources of the Society.
- To provide information, training and ongoing support in the use of prescribed disease modifying drugs.
Our team offers assistance through community nurses and the hospital liaison nurse.
The Community Access Nurse function is to assist Members to remain independent and living within their own homes, where possible and practicable, by trying to make the Member's local community work for them.
The Community Access Nurse will :
- Assess Members and develop an individualised care plan as required.
- Refer Members to community based support services and agencies.
- Provide relevant information about community based contacts and support agencies.
- Provide information about the Society's services.
- Support the Outreach Groups in Beechboro, Wilson, Rockingham, Bunbury and Albany.

Immunotherapy treatments stimulate or modify the body’s immune response. Immunotherapy medications may be prescribed by the neurologist and are usually administered by self injection. The Community Health Nurse works with people with MS in their homes or at MS Society Centres to provide Information on medications, education and training on injection techniques and advice on how to manage any side effects of the medication.

The Hospital Liaison Nurse works with people with MS in the community and in hospital based clinics.
The Hospital Liaison Nurse will provide:
- a contact for newly diagnosed not ready to join the MS Society
- a primary contact for people with MS presenting through the health system
- Provide holistic assessment, advice , support and referrals
- Provide immunotherapy education, training and support
- Links hospital and community based health professionals
- Advocacy for those affected by MS
- A link between the community and health system.
