Coping with the diagnosis

By the time MS has been diagnosed, many people will have already experienced the uncertainty and frustration of dealing with different symptoms which are often invisible to others.

For some, the diagnosis may be a relief but it is common for individuals to feel out of control of their lives and experience grief, a process which includes the stages of denial and isolation, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance. Often people move in and out of any of these stages randomly however, each of these stages is normal and important in reorganising thinking and responding to this new information.

To assist in coming to terms with the diagnosis, many people find it useful to become informed about MS, its symptoms and their management, seek support of family and friends as well as from organisations such as the MS Society of WA. Good communication with family, health professionals and counsellors can also be most valuable at this time.

To speak to someone from the Society about receiving practical and emotional support, please call the Social Work Manager on 9365 4835.
